To socialize or talk informally preferably over a drink. Word forms: 3rd person singular present tense hobnobs, present participle hobnobbing, past tense, past participle hobnobbed.
But honestly. Hobnob is a safe space for women who prefer iced coffee over a perfectly curated wardrobe. It’s a daycare center for women who are intrigued by trends, but also don’t care. It is an open bar for those who swear on vintage Chanel and whose pension funds hang in their closets.
Every year, the same thing. As the season starts to transit so does the style, but it’s not always easy to keep up. The solution? Be smart with your wardrobe, look at what you’ve got and can do with it. Every season cannot mean new purchases, this is something we must tell ourselves even when everything we want to do is buy new. The content of your closet does not necessarily suck, but your imagination might. But fear not, the joy of fashion week season just being over is we have endless inspiration to enjoy for free and styling hacks to steal both from the streets and runway shamelessly.
Menswear and womenswear, what belongs where anymore? Gender turns out less and less interesting moving forward in fashion. The classic men’s coded tie has been seen more frequently in the past couple of seasons, at Louis Vuitton and Prada just to name two, and this season the ties were everywhere. Valentino dedicated the whole collection to the encounter of menswear and womenswear and what happens when they meet without respect for each other’s heritage. After watching the show can establish, magic. Luar also nailed the tie look in a very new take on business sexy.
Ties are everywhere. Go to your dad or father-in-law’s closet and borrow (steal) one. Or you know, visit your local goodwill store. Wear it with a white plain shirt, over a heavy knit, with a t-shirt (Serena Van Der Woodsen-style) and to any occasion. From party to the office.
I shall admit, I’m not the one with all the matching underwear sets in my drawer. But the unlined skirt might have to change that. Miuccia Prada of Prada and Miu Miu have always loved the unlined skirt and I have always hated the way lining ruins a beautiful skirt or dress. This is why I wasn’t shy to cut the lining off a few of my favorite skirts and dresses when she re-introduced the unlined dresses and skirts a few seasons ago. Of course, the naked dress or naked skirt was not invented by Miuccia Prada but she makes it look so effortless and cute on the contrary to what it can look like: an Ibiza after party. It’s not that I hate an Ibiza after party, I do, but not to work on a Tuesday. The cute matching underwear makes the look so much more put-together.
I started by cutting the lining off a vintage sheer dress and wore it with black undies and a big blazer underneath. A good start. Next up was a sequin skirt with this hideous poly lining that I cut and wore with large panties and a grey crewneck sweater. I suggest you try that, too.
Ah, tale as old as time. Pants met skirt, skirt met pants and love arose directly. Say no more. To layer your skirt with pants is the quickest and easiest way to elevate your look under the minute.
If you are new to the layering game, pleased to have you, welcome. Getting into it, you can start by making the look tonal, meaning a black skirt and black trousers, like above at Balenciaga. When you are more comfortable, switch the black skirt for your sequin party skirt like at Laur and ta-daa you have graduated from layering skirt and pants-school.
Just like in the late 90s, there is no look that will say no to the company of a rose. Add it to your choker, to the dress, a denim jacket or even to the lining of your jeans.
Google rose applicé or get crafty with old fabric, a needle, and a pin. The bigger the rose the better, that goes for any occasion.
There’s nothing new under the sun with the no pants-look. In fact, Donald Duck has been sporting it for many decades now. The way to do it 2023 is with sheer black stockings and a knit or bedazzled knicker, at least if you ask Miu Miu or Bottega Veneta.
First, the sheer black stockings are the first rule to add when removing the pants from your look. Keeping the overall look simple is the second rule. The third is definitely to walk proud and carry your knickers like you mean it. Nobody remembers a coward.
The white shirt is to be found in almost everyone’s closet. This season we love to see the collar of your white shirt, get some well-deserved attention. It’s all in the small details.
Just tuck your collar outside your blazer/sweater/coat. As simple as that.
I saved the easiest for last, beacuse this is truly a no-brainer. Take your look from zero to Miu Miu in a second by adding a thick hoodie underneath your oversized blazer.
The trick to this look is to still keep the look neat underneath the hoodie and blazer and not go full athleisure. Maybe add the style to your barely-there skirt which you created by cutting the lining? Just a thought.
